The Andrews Bowen arena size will be reduced from 60m to 47m as a temporary measure from 12/10/11 to 14/11/11 due to the upgrade of the 2nd indoor arena to have a new Andrews Bowen pro wax surface, new eco friendly kickboards and wall to wall mirrors on the A line.

1st October 2011 National Amateur 2nd Rounds

Summerhouse EC couldn’t have asked for better weather to hold National Amateur 2nd rounds on the 1st October. Summerhouse attracted good entries for the 1m, 1.10m and 1.15m qualifying classes for the finals to be held at Aintree in November. The course was designed by Alison Naylor. Classes were judged by Elizabeth Parsons and Jane Ogle.

The 1m qualifier was a strong class with 49 entries and 27 through to the jump off. Only 7 went on to jump a double clear with the winner being Kevin Peates. Kevin and his 16 year old Dutch bred New Mystery had already qualified for the 90cm and are looking forward to attending the finals at Aintree for the second year in a row. The pair only started jumping together in 2010 after the horse switched from dressage to show jumping. New Mystery by Good Times spent 5 years as a stallion before being gelded as a 9 Year old. Kevin works full time and enjoys show jumping at weekends. Pushed into 2nd place by Kevin were Ann Solis and 16 year old Franklins On Air a Dutch Warmblood by Concarde. This was the pair’s first visit to Summerhouse and they stabled over night after travelling down the day before. Ann returned to riding 2 years ago after a 25 year break. They enjoy jumping as a hobby and Ann says Franklin is a lovely horse to jump that looks after her. Both Kevin and Ann are winners of their own regions point’s awards this year.

Winner of the 1.10m qualifier was Bina Ford and Tea Time III. Also taking 2nd place in the 1.15m Qualifier to Bryony Morris and Stormy Morning. Bina and Tea Time regularly compete at Summerhouse and have had a brilliant season with 27 wins. Purchased from Anna Edwards from Cornwall as a 9 year old a year and a half ago the pair have gone from strength to strength. Bina praises him for being a fantastic horse, Tea Time is her only horse but lives and travels with her miniature Shetland. Show jumping is an obsessive hobby for Bina and she also helps others with competition horses and race horses. Coming 2nd to Bina were Philipa Ashworth riding her Belgian Warmblood Tango. Philipa has owned the 14 year old for 8 years. The pair also qualified in the 1m. Philipa came 5th in the 1.10m and qualified her other horse Chateau Stefan

Bryony Morris who is Assistant Yard Manager at Summerhouse had a fantastic win in the 1.15m Qualifier beating Bina in the jump off by over 8 seconds. Bryony was riding her own horse Stormy Morning by Dallas Brightspark who she has owned for 11 years. The pair compete in 1.30m classes and are trained by Jonathan Bowman. They hope to also qualify for the 1.10m after being unlucky on this day. Bryony is looking forward to attending Aintree having also qualified Helen Gallops Wilane in the 1.10m.

HOYS 1.20m Amateur Classic Qualifier 22nd May 2011

Charlotte Flack overcame a 104-strong field to clinch the top ticket in the Horse of the Year show amateur 1.20m classic with Toby Baker’s nine-year-old mare Datana. “It was always going to be a very fast jump-off,” said Charlotte who is enjoying a successful partnership with Toby and taking full advantage of the opportunity to produce and sell his horses. “I can trust this mare and I put my foot to the floor. The more you dare her the better she is.“

A cleverly thought out track designed by Steve Williams reduced the bumper entry to 44 in the jump-off. “This qualifier always poses a difficult task,” said Steve. “I needed to cater for the strong contingent of professional combinations but at the same-time not kill off the true amateurs.”

As predicted, this was a fast and furious affair which saw Jay Halim storm into the lead during the first third of the draw riding Lauren Cramham’s ten-year-old event horse Adagio III. “I’m travelling him to Tattersalls tomorrow for the 2*,” said Jay who held on to the third place qualification. “I’m only based a short distance from this showground and thought I’d come and have a shot at it. On a good day he’s very competitive and we won the Blue Chip Karma final.” Lauren bought her German-bred son of Appregio two years ago to event. “He’s a complex character and I describe him as being a sophisticated ride,” said Jay. “We won the intermediate at Tweseldown and also qualified for the dressage championships. I’ve never been to HOYS before and it’s nice to tick the box.” Jay’s time of 40.48 looked good enough to win until Charlotte entered the fray on the naturally quick Datana. They didn’t miss a beat and sliced two seconds off the target. “We’ve just come back from two weeks in Fontainebleau where she won every day,” said Charlotte. Toby said: “It’s great to see a partnership click like this. This mare belonged to my neighbours who asked me to sell her for them. I liked her so much I bought her myself. Our intention is to buy and sell horses but Charlotte has threatened me not to sell this one!”

With the 40-second barrier broken, clear rounds proved hard to come by as riders chased the clock. Keeping a cool head was critical and by utilising his vast experience Norman Proffitt produced a close run challenge for the second placed ticket on Audrey Evans’ 12-year-old gelding Patent. “I planned to turn inside after the stile but he jumped it so big I had to go around,” said Norman. “I didn’t panic; I know he’s a very quick horse and we made up the time at the double and down the final line. The course-builder did a good job and wasn’t afraid to hold back with some of the verticals standing at 1.35m in the jump-off.” Norman has the ride on the 16.1hh gelding while Audrey’s granddaughter Sarah is travelling abroad. “We’ve won the minor and major veteran championships and also the Blue Chip Star final,” he said. “I’ve been to HOYS plenty of times and we did qualify for the Yorkshire amateur final which is why it’s nice to know we’re guaranteed a proper championship with this one.” REPORT By Kathryn Pearn.

Sara Gallop & Summerhouse Zelham Secure National Victory!

Equissage Elementary Open Music Freestyle Championship

Gloucester dressage rider Sara Gallop and her mother Helen's stunning seven year old gelding Summerhouse Zelham have scored a national victory in the Equissage Elementary Open Music Freestyle Championship at the NAF Five Star Winter Dressage Championships, Hartpury Arena 14 April.

A show-stopping 80.42% score secured the number one spot for Sara and Zelham who were in receipt of the much coveted mark of '10'.

Sara is trained by Carl Hester, Pammy Hutton and showjumper Rowland Fernyhough and has produced the compact Sir Sinclair bred gelding since he was a just-backed three year old.

"I've had phenomenal help along the way with him," Sara told British Dressage. "We are using the jumping with Rowland to strengthen up his behind. When he was younger he had all this power and just couldn't carry himself for it."

Sara has applied her trainer Carl Hester's approach to young horses, "You want them for the future so we have taken our time with him."

Sara and Summerhouse Zelham train at Advanced Medium level at home and are looking forward to competing in the Elevator Medium Music Freestyle Championship this Saturday, 16th April. "You can put a lot of pressure on yourself at the championships, but this is about the most laidback we've been! I think as long as you prepare correctly and have a proper regime you'll be fine."

Discussing the championships winning performance Sara said, "He actually felt a bit tired in the test. I thought it would let us down but it didn't!"

7th November 2010 - Blue Chip TAG66 Pony Winter Qualifier

We had another busy Pony day and the Blue Chip Qualifier attracted some new faces to Summerhouse. The qualifying class designed by Steve Williams had 25 starters with 10 going through to the jump off. Becka James and her pony La Mia Bellezza that she has owned since March 2010 won the class with a fast round almost 4 seconds quicker then 2nd placed Bobby Blue II ridden by Charlotte Jones.

Becka and La Mia Bellezza based in Reading have formed a great partnership in their short time together and are going from strength to strength, recently either winning or being placed every time out. The pair also qualified for Trailblazers 2nd rounds and Scope 2nd rounds in Novice and Discovery.

Along with show jumping the pair also compete in dressage and are about to affiliate to British Dressage. They are members of South Berkshire Pony Club and during the summer they attended Pony Club Camp and competed in the Pony Club Area Competitions in both Dressage and Show Jumping.

They really are a fab combination and for the family La Mia Bellezza is a once in a lifetime pony that is loved very much by them all.
